More Trees Down on the Cape…

October 31, 2011

Hey!

Cisco the blogging cat here… Let’s see… Tropical Storm Irene brought down a massive maple… (half cut up on the ground)

-and the newly dropped trees-

Well, unlike 2,000,000 people, at least we didn’t lose power… And this is before the first flake of snow on Cape Cod…

I am most definitely going to stock up on my adult beverages…

Already exhausted by the racks,

Hey cats and kittens,

Cisco the Harwich Spirits Shoppe blogging cat here…

(Handsome rapscallion ain’t I? Say… does that nice bottle remind you that maybe you’ll need something for those adult trick or treat’ers?)

Anywho… A couple posts ago, I gave a list of beer news sites. Seems that I ought to  do the same for wine, and here it is…

There… That should take care of you grape sniffing snobs for a while…

By the racks and drinking a beer,

Halloween and New Contest…

October 23, 2011

Yeah, it’s that time of the year again… Time to brace for the little monsters and prep for grown-up Halloween parties.  So, are you prepared? (Have you gathered supplies for your Pumpkin Ale Bread yet?!? Stocked up on your Halloween beer? Readied your costume?)

Ok, forget the costume question lest Bruce decides to don one of his monstrosities… Yeah, definitely skip the costume.

Mercifully… Onward…

Rumor has it that Da Gizz is conniving a new contest for Halloween, but at this point he’s mulling over its nature. Until we finalize the contest, the best way to get insider info is to stop in the store. (To find Harwich Spirits Shoppe, just click on the “About Us” button above.)

Qaddafi is dead…

October 20, 2011

Hey, Cisco the cat here…

It’s been a good day…

Granted, this is the Harwich Spirits Shoppe blog… But it seems to me that it would be unfitting to fail to mention the death of Qaddafi…

From the video, it looks like he was wounded and beaten, and then eventually shot in the head. Personally, I hope his torment lasted a full two minutes — the length of time it took for Pan Am flight 103 to fall back to earth in Lockerbie Scotland. (Click here for a particularly sickening account of what those poor souls on 103 went through.) Looking forward, who knows what’s going to happen in Libya (or Iraq, or Afghanistan, or…) But as for today, I’ve had worse. Qaddafi… burn you bastard burn…

Boston Red Sox… What Went Wrong

October 19, 2011

Not pretty is it? Well no, it shouldn’t be. Confusion never is.

One sports statistician put the odds of the Red Sox implosion at 278,000,000:1. Now… There are liars, damned liars, and then there are people who bandy stats… Still, you have to admit that the Bo’Sox collapse was weird even for Boston standards. (Can you say, “Bill Buckner“, or, “1978“?)

But there’s a trend here…

  • Will Cordero — in ’97, Will beats his pregnant wife with a phone — Red Sox kept him for the season. (Back in the day, New York Yankees player Ruben Rivera was cut snicker snack when he was caught stealing a bat and glove.)
  • Mo Vaughn — 1998… Mo Vaughn was coming back from a strip club and hit a car in the break-down lane… Acquited. I quote: “As Vaughn was walking out of the courtroom, two bailiffs congratulated him, one patting him on the back.” Quaint.
  • Mid 1980s — Red Sox player Wade Boggs has four year affair and then blames it on his “addiction to sex.” Isn’t that special?
  • Drinking in the clubhouse (Parts I and II) — Never stopped them back in 2004
  • Roger Clemens juiced? Never! Lying before Congress? Couldn’t happen…

The story line here isn’t about mistakes — it’s about embarrassing mistakes. It’s about confusion.

Obviously, this isn’t anything new for the Sox, but it is more or less predictable. Firm leadership in both ownership and coaching goes a long way — think Red Auerbach, Bill Parcelles, Bob Kraft. Them again there’s ‘Pete the Poodle’… While this rule isn’t hard and fast, just look at the history.

Every team has players with ‘issues’. Not to put too fine a point on my assertion, but Bill Belichick managed to control even Randy Moss for a good deal of time. Still… coaches do lose their edge…

Back to baseball… Sorry Tony… But let this be a lesson once and for all as to who runs the asylum.

By the racks with the Cracker Jack…

The World’s Finest .22 Rifle?

October 17, 2011

Hey,

Cisco the blogging Harwich Spirits Shoppe cat here. Bet you didn’t know that I’m a gun-totin’ feline… (Yup… Once I learned how to use my dew claws as opposable thumbs, there was no stopping me.)

Before I get started, let me just throw in a word of obvious and sane… Before you ever go near a firearm, be sure to take an NRA-approved gun class, get your certificate, and then get your FID card or pistol permit from the police. And always remember the cardinal rule: if you treat every gun like it’s loaded, no one will ever get hurt.

Alrighty then… Let’s take a look at the Henry U.S. Survival rifle — a breakdown, 8-shot, clip-fed piece…

Here it is assembled…

And disassembled…

And finally, about to be completely stored in its own watertight stock…

I’ve shot a bunch of guns, but I like this one best. Here’s why…

  • It’s a .22… Cheap to shoot.
  • The Henry is a well-made American product.
  • Relatively speaking, it’s cheap — ~ $ 250.
  • It’s light and small — about three pounds and 17″ stored.
  • Its got a great reputation.
  • With a scope and the right ammo (CCI Mini-Mags), it’s about as accurate as the average .22 — 2″ groups at 50 yards.
  • As has been reported in the past, the Henry is reliable. Using the Mini-Mags, we must have pushed 100 rounds through it without a hitch. Just keep it clean.
  • It was designed by Eugene Stoner, one of the 20th century’s foremost firearms designers. (Mr. Stoner also designed the AR-15, which became the now famous military M-16.)
  • It’s rugged. For example, the entire barrel is encased in plastic…
  • It’s brilliantly simple — the entire weapon consists of only 40 parts, and regular take-down and assembly require no tools. Also, cleaning is simplicity itself.
  • Even assembled it’s small — it doesn’t get in the way.
Seriously, I like this gun… This one is going to see a whole ton of plinking. Many rifles, shotguns, and pistols have crossed my path, but this is my fave by far and away.

By the racks,

Three cats blogging by the racks and the targets…
