Irene Damage and Storm Survival Thoughts

August 30, 2011

Hey, Cisco the Harwich Spirits Shoppe blogging cat here…

Well, here’s just one example of what hurricane-strength gusts can do…

Boy, does this suck! Remember how I’ve been warning you that Hurricane Irene was going to jump ugly on us, even if only a strong tropical storm?

(Note… The following was composed after the night of the storm…)

So I’m sitting here in the dark typing away in Notepad to the din of our generator. (The radio says that I’m one of 250,000 NStar customers without power.) The phones don’t work, and we don’t even have Internet connectivity. Does anyone even know what’s going on in the world???

Thoughts…

Good news/bad news:

First the good news

  • Here at the homestead, our 3250 watt generator is coming through like a champ… It can only handle the fridge/freezer and a few lights, but we saved our food.
  • We love our LED flashlights — just the little cheapie single AAA hasn’t failed us…
  • Our L.L. Bean crank weather radio hasn’t let us down… (Though paws and crank are a strange combination.)
  • Strangely, the new Motorola “Walkie Talkies” (good for a dozen miles or more and only $40) have come in handy… In this day and age of the cell phone, we had numerous problems with connecting to a cellular tower. Enter the Motorola…
  • It was surprising how many tree removal specialists we talked with gave us ‘The Cold Shoulder”. We ended up with ‘Tree Co. Inc.‘ — they’re pros all the way — quick response, on time for the clean up, knowledgeable — just a great crew. Repeat… ‘Tree Co. Inc.‘ did a great job!

Notes on emergency preparedness that didn’t work:

  • Our cable provider, Comcast dropped the ball long ago. I know that they’re struggling with a hurricane right now, but Internet connectivity and communication are, at times, critical… So much of the wire they’ve run over the years should have been underground… In the end, we had the power, but they didn’t have the signal. (Addendum — We were down for about 24 hours, and we can’t say “Thank you!” enough for their incredible work…)
  • We only had two bags of ice and a cheap cooler — oops.
  • Need to find a better way to heat food, the grill was not accessible…
  • No matter what, we have to boost the signal for our cell phones — right now, those are ‘iffy’ at the very best…
  • TV is a must… Us cats are news junkies, and the radio just ain’t cutting it…

  • Need to investigate solar battery chargers for the phones etc.!

Gotta run…. Time to check the cat boxes…

See you by those oh so reassuring racks…

Irene: So Far, So Good… Sort of…

August 28, 2011

Hey, Cisco the Harwich Spirits Shoppe blogging cat here…

Take a look at the following NOAA maps/charts…

What this boils down to is that right now, predictions say that the Mid-Cape will for the most part escape the wrath of Irene. All told we’re potentially looking at about 3″ of rain and 60+ MPH wind gusts, and for many, that’s not all that bad. For Cisco however, that kind of rain can flood our basement and those winds can wreck our antique aluminum boat, so be careful how you gloat… (Besides, a 64 MPH wind gust can jump ugly on a window or two at your casa…)

Having grown up on the Cape, I’ll tell you that these storms are sleepers… Just when you think you’re in the clear, the power goes out, or a friggin’ tree limb falls and ruins your day.

If nothing else, hopefully, this has been a good drill for you. Hopefully, you’ve got backup water supplies, canned goods, and flashlights. Hopefully you’re getting in the habit of watching the forecasts and heeding the warnings… If nothing else, hopefully, you’re ready for the next hurricane, or January Nor’ Easter… If not, Mother Nature has given you more than enough of a warning…

Play it safe, and be safe… This storm isn’t done yet and it’s not a ‘done deal’ regardless of what the experts say… Not by a long shot… We still have a lot of surf, a lot of tide… Again, play it safe, and be safe…

Still prepped and secure by the racks…

Stock Up Now!!!

August 27, 2011

What part of, “This isn’t looking so good,” don’t you understand?

That Irene ‘wind field’ (hurricane/tropical storm) is 460 miles across. All of Massachusetts is only 175 miles, and Cape Cod is a piddly 37 miles. Even if this does turn into ‘just a tropical storm’, the entire Eastern Seaboard is going to take a beating, and it only takes one tree limb to turn out the lights for millions. Besides… If nothing else, the magic word is ‘rain’.

So… Are you ready? And do you have your beer, wine, and spirits ready for the long haul?

Hey… I’m just a cat prepped by the racks…

Irene Draws Closer… Are You Truly Prepared?

August 25, 2011

Hey, Cisco, the HSS blogging cat here…

About hurricane Irene…

Above from Boston.com

Alright, you’ve been to the Red Cross site and have started making your preparations… Other things to think about…

  • Is your boat/trailer secure to the ground?
  • Have you backed up your data off your hard drive?
  • Did you take pictures of your belongings/home for insurance purposes?
  • Do you have your insurance form on your person along with a pocket knife and flashlight?
  • Do you have spare clothes including sweats in a watertight bag?
  • How much cash do you have?
  • How are you going to save the stuff in your refrig?
  • What about all those computer passwords you have?
  • Is the boat/trailer secured into the ground?
  • Is the propane tank on your grill full?
  • Have you secured your firearms?
  • Did you talk with your boss about possible telecommuting?
  • Do you have any form of communication should land lines and cellular goes out?
  • And then there are those bird feeders and bird baths…
  • One can never have enough bungee cords and nylon cable ties…
  • Did you stock up on essentials like wine and beer?

And so it goes… get ready…

Quake and Blow… Prepare… Survive Comfortably…

August 23, 2011

Oh yeah… I’ve heard it before — “That crazy Harwich Spirits Shoppe cat is predicting yet another disaster.” Well how did you like our little 5.8 afternoon reel today? “No problem…” you say. Fair enough. But what about the pic below?

“A possible hurricane? you scoff…” Running out of luck?… Most likely not… not this time… But the day is coming…

Once again, here’s what we do to prepare…

  • Study this Red Cross site, (and follow the directions!) It’s free and thorough…

  • Imagine you’re watching TV at 10:30pm and the lights simply go out –poof! The electricity gone bye-bye… Now what? Do you grope around in the darkness struggling to find that flashlight with the RIP batteries? Not me kid! Not me — I always keep small flashlight and pocket knife on my person. (Or in our case on your feline.)

  • By the way… Do you have a generator? By the time you read this we will… Nice cold fridge… Nice cold stash of beer and wine…

Hey, we’re ready by the racks… Are you?

Money!!!

August 22, 2011

Hey cats and kittens,

Cisco the blogging Felis catus here… Does the image above remind you of anything? Just a little?

How do I explain this to you humanoids? Ummm… This is Cape Cod, it’s the end of summer and the tourists are everywhere. You have three options relative to the ‘Great Sunday HSS Yard Sale‘:

  1. You can snag a table space for ten smackers and start selling stuff. (Read that, “Cleaning out the house of unused but still quality goods!”)

  2. You can stop by and buy a bargain. (Remember how I told you those used-once car ramps were going to go for $20? Color them gone.) Somebody sniped your bargain.

  3. Or… You can just sit home, stuff your pie hole, watch the one-eyed brain bandit, let the dust settle on things you’ll never use again, miss the opportunity to share the Harwich experience, and in general be a dud…

This old cat don’t know… But fun and $100 sure makes the image above dance in my head…

As always, purring by the racks…
