Review: Kodak PlaySport Zx3

Cisco and Ponchita the HSS blogging cats here… Well… Uncle Bruce has got himself a new toy – a Kodak PlaySport Zx3 compact video camera, and we’re here to give it a quick report. Right off the bat, take a look at his first video… (And pay no attention to his references to “Alan”. Jimmy Stewart had “Harvey”, and Bruce has “Alan”.)

(Normally, we would have embedded the actual video into the post, but one thing at a time… Thoughts…)

* As these small cams go (Flip is another), the Kodak does a pretty good job with the actual video… (See this link for specs.)

* The unit is compact enough…

* The price is pretty good – $140 for cam, 4GB of extra memory, mini-tripod, battery, remote…

* All told, the cam itself is fairly easy to operate…

* The on/off switch seems particularly fussy. This could be a major issue.

* We found the audio weak…

* I don’t think I’d trust its claim to “waterproof” up to three meters. Maybe somewhat weather resistant, but not waterproof.

* It’s difficult to get the memory card in and out…

* It records in the Mac “MOV” format. Arghh!!! That eliminates the option of using MS Windows Movie Maker to edit. (See next bullet.)

* The editing software provided is ArcSoft MediaImpression for Kodak… Ughhh! Yes, we can make it work, but Microsoft’s product is head and shoulders better. Down the road, we’ll probably be buying the full version of the Quicktime editor to make this more manageable.

Bottom line? The Kodak PlaySport Zx3 looks like a respectable gadget. It deserves its outstanding sales record. We wish it shot in AVI so that we could have at it with MS Movie Maker, but we’ll get by…

Two cats blogging by the clapperboard…
