Summertime Videos

July 31, 2010

Just to prove that we’re not all wine, beer, spirits, and sundries here at HSS, how about a few funny/unusual videos to to round out your day…

Gee, I wonder if the boss will spring for one of those? At least we could make high-speed videos of decent creatures like cats. (“Phantom camera line from $50,000 to $150,000 depending on specific model and features.*)

Ah… Back to reality… Sort of…

Can you say “existentialism”?

And speaking of existentialism…

And on that happy note…

As always, two cats by the racks,

It’s Too Hot…

July 29, 2010

That’s it! Normally I’d make clever banter, talk up some wine, deride Da Gizz, and in general complain because no one takes a cat seriously. But it’s just too hot. If you’re situated in some place like Boston, New York, Providence, Newark, etc., you’re probably melting. Tell you what… head for Harwich on the Cape. We’ve got cool ocean breezes, and Red River Beach has plenty o’ parking. The water temp is perfect and clean, and none too crowded…

No joke, that’s a photo of RRB taken this summer under obviously great conditions.

Still, it’s hot… And without the Harwich Spirits Shoppe’ A/C, I’d be ripping out clumps of fur faster than a Congressman rips thru hookers and your tax dollars. (I’m sorry… Did I say that?)

My suggestion? Pour yourself a nice cool glass of beer or wine, crank the air conditioning, make your Capeward plans, and crash to Cass Elliot and Tom Smothers…

See you by those racks!

Great BBQ and the Real ‘Old Cape Cod’…

July 27, 2010

Hey!

Hope you made the “Saturday last” event… All kinds of free staples like hot dogs, fruit salad, veggie platter, etc.  We’d have pictures, but the weather was a bit ominous. (These two cats have lost far, far, far more than their share of camera equipment to H2O.) And true to form for a hot Cape Cod Summer afternoon, it did grumble and sprinkle somewhat, but not enough to dent the fun. (Though a little downpour on the grill might have saved a few wieners from the wrath of “Bruce ‘The Incinerating Cook’ Gibson”.) But all said and done it was damn close to perfection in its own peculiar way*…

I’m just a cat, and I don’t know how to write the following, but I’ll take a shot at it…

So many people come from Boston, New York, and all points New Jersey looking for the stuff of Patti Page’s “Old Cape Cod”. Truth be told, there isn’t as much as there used to be. (Duh… Times change! But there are a few stout bastions… The Harwich Junior Theater, Brax, and the Port O’ Call all leap to mind.) And Harwich Spirits Shoppe is no exception. But Bruce has gone way out of his way to make the Shoppe… Ummm… Ummm… Let’s just say that it’s informal.

Plan on another BBQ next month, though tomorrow might just happen too. As always, it’s a freebie, all-you-can-eat, buy-nothing, informal, Cape Cod gathering. Be ready, and if you get the chance, invite Patti Page…

As always,

Upcoming Bar-B-Que, Weather, Etc…

July 23, 2010

Hey! Just a couple of thoughts on yet another hot July night…

Well, odds are that you won’t see the following at Bruce’s barbecue… Too bad… Kind of cute in a nostalgic sort of way…

Regardless, the shindig will make for an interesting time. Don’t forget the plan Stan – pot luck.

The other point we wanted to bring up is the heat wave we’ve been having… All that warm temperature translates into warm water – very warm water. (If you will, take you time and look at this link…) Basically, warm water equates to hurricane heaven. No, we’re not predicting a hurricane or even a drizzle. But what we are saying is that the conditions are there for a possible problem. (Don’t go jumping in your car and heading for the sanctuary of Caribou Maine because “a.)” no one is prognosticating a hurricane, and “b.)” the black flies in the “Pine Tree State” this time of year would eat you alive and then pick their teeth with your shadow.) We’re just suggesting that you review your emergency preparedness wherever you live.

So that’s about it… Trying to stay cool and getting ready for the party…

A Solid Wine Value and the Upcoming BBQ

July 21, 2010

Before we get to the barbee…

All right, so call me chicken. (I’m a cat actually.) But I was going to show you a “Bear Wine” label… But nooo! It looks like the copyright police might just jump ugly on me. So be it… Here’s a site that shows the label Truth be told, it’s a good wine. There are two whites and two reds, with the whites being soft and gentle, and the reds being… well.. reds. All said and done these are value wines; they’re respectable from any angle, and a steal at $10/bottle. ($25 for three and who knows what for a case… Ask.)

Now, about that cookout… Remember that it’s scheduled for PM, Sat., July 24 behind the Harwich Spirits Shoppe… It will be a pot luck sort of deal, and we’ll be bringing hot dogs, home-made bread, etc.

B there or B2

Beer and George’s Fish Market Wings

July 17, 2010

Give up all hope ye who enter this post… It’s summer and the time for sinful eating and drinking. (Do it now before the government makes it illegal.)

We’re talking the best here…

or…

Make no mistake, the wings are from George’s top to bottom… But the question remains, “What beer?” I opt for the latter… I think you need something “thin” to cut through the strength of the wings. Others are free to disagree (and of course be wrong…) But in any event, if you’re even remotely close to Harwich and have a hankering for wings, head on over to George’s and then ye’ old Spirits Shoppe for the appropriate pop.

Two hot cats blogging the finest from between the racks…

P.S. Don’t forget our upcoming BBQ on the 24th!

Firewood for Da Gizz and BBQ!!!

July 16, 2010

First things first… Bruce ain’t stupid. He may be crazy, but he sure ain’t stupid. Anytime anyone is getting rid of some wood, Da Gizz will take it off their hands (within the bounds of common sense). In our case, we’re cleaning up around the back yard, and the pile keeps growing…

Fine… We’ll cut it up and Da Gizz will take it away. It’s good to think of January in July.

And speaking of July… What do you say we have another cook out? Say Saturday, July 24th, back of the Spirits Shoppe, afternoon-ish? Panchita and I will bring some hot-dogs, home-made black-pepper bread, and home-made ice cream. In general, it will be a pot luck event… All watched over by Panchita of loving grace…
