February 28, 2010

Here it is! We warned you that Bruce was going to start pounding out free on-line tutorials…

Yeah… Just look over on the lower right… Tutorials…

Brace yourself. No. Seriously. Brace yourself.

Harwich Spirits Shoppe Wine Tutorials… Oh No…

February 26, 2010

Dear diary,

I awoke earlier than usual this morning with some weird dread upon me. It was as if (to borrow from Emily Dickinson) I waked, to find it first awake… Bruce (Da Gizz) had done something, but I knew not what. But there hovered brethren cat Ponchita, eyes red and swollen, her little kitty lips trembling.

“Now what did he do?” I moaned.

“He…” wimpered Ponchita.

“He what?!?” my anger rising.

“Oh Cisco!” Ponchita burst out… “Da Gizz has started a series of tutorials!”

I sat there numb. The news simply scattered the chickens of my mind. I tried to maintain some sort of feline decorum…

Quietly and slowly, I asked, “Ponchita, what kind of tutorial is Bruce producing, and where is he producing it?” (Knowing Bruce, it could be anything from rock gardening to nuclear fusion.)

“Here,”, she cried as she thrust a screen shot of this very blog before me…

“There it is circled in red,” She continued… “Now look down to your right and you’ll see the real thing. And it’s not just on this post… It’s on every Harwich Spirits Shoppe Talk post! It’s right on this very blog.”

“How bad,” I asked.

“Not too…” she sniffled.

(Ponchita would later admit that the actual tutorial content was excellent… It was just that the delivery system (Bruce) was … ummm … different.)

In any event… There you have it… The beginning of a frightening collection of tutorials (mostly about wine) free for the taking right there on your right.

And with that, dear diary, I think I’ll put on some Tom Waits and try to get back to sleep,

See you by the racks,

Wanted: Da Gizz! (and Yelena)

February 23, 2010

There you go… There’s your wanted poster. Trust two cats to bring you the facts. Yeah, the boss (Bruce on the left) and Yelena know their wines. We won’t argue with that.  The wines behind them stretch to the ceiling… The store is loaded to the scuppers with beer and wine. Fine, but that’s not the story here! Not even close.

Take a close look to the right of Da Gizz’s left ear. See that thumb? A ha! That’s just one of Bruce’s massive thumb collection… We should know… As cats, we wander the store late at night and have stumbled upon vast caches of thumbs. (We told you that we should have kept Da Gizz locked in the wine cellar.)

Look, here are the straight feline facts… If you want beer, wine, liquor (in season) soda, snacks, lottery, wholly random stuff, Cape and Harwich lore, a touch of insanity, please come to the Harwich Spirits Shoppe. We won’t let you down. (That’s especially true concerning the insanity part.) But just do yourself one huge favor – watch your thumbs around Da Gizz – he’s crazier than an outhouse rat, and we should know…

What Do Cats Do At 2AM?

February 21, 2010

Ever wonder what we Harwich Spirits Shoppe cats do at two o’clock in the morning? Well this will give you some idea…

Yeah, that’s me, Cisco, in the white ellipse pondering things eternal. (Or was that just a dial tone?) Anyway, Ponchita and I typically do the following… We roam the shop for our almost-favorite wines and simply steal them along with a few snacks. (Whatcha gonna do Bruce (aka Da Gizz)? Call the cops? You think that they’ll believe that you have two cats who can not only steal wine, but open it, and then blog about the process as well? I don’t think so!)

Besides, we attract customers and are rodent-ready gobblers should the need ever arise….  Gotta pay the piper dude. But there’s always a problem in that Bruce carries quality wines and actually knows what he’s talking about. We lean towards the… ummm… the more “apocryphal”, or lesser, or questionable wines. We believe in adventure! (And, if we do yack up some junk we can blame it on hairballs.) But ya takes what ya gets, and in the case of the ol’ HSS, ya gets good stuff. Still, we long for the roaring (if not flaming days) of Australian Table Wines…

Alas, we have to settle for a 1997 Gallo Single Vineyard Northern Sonoma Cabernet…

And that’s what these cats do at 2AM.

See you by the racks, and if you can, bring some Chateau Chanda just for old times sake…

News Flash! Pic of Mathematically-Inclined Cats

February 18, 2010

This just in to Shoppe Talk… Here’s a picture of Tiler & Banks, the two cats who respectfully entered a guess of 724 corks for their roommate Joseph Costa.

When asked about their remarkably accurate calculation, they simply replied that they were off by only 6.46%, but seemed slightly disappointed. They explained that they had taken an outline of the jug holding the corks, mathematically spun that outline into three dimensions and then calculated in the volume of the average cork along with random spacing. Banks was quick to interject that their problem was in the guesstimate of the jug wall thickness and wistfully said that if they’d had gotten that right, they would have easily beaten their project design specs of +/- 5%. Then they both went back to sleep.

Yeah, you can check out the glossaries below for good wine info, but where else? Ahhh… If there’s anything us cats like almost as much as a catnip mouse, it’s lurking the Internet. Now, check out these great sites…
